A New York bill, proposed Monday in both chambers of the New York State Legislature, would combat cyber-bullying by effectively banning comments from anonymous users on New York-based websites, blogs, forums, social networks, and pretty much any other form of online communication, reports Wired.

Full story:
http://www.neowin.ne...online-comments

My 2 cents:

1) if you have to enter a name to the sites, enter in a fake one, you're already around the system
2) freedom of speech is supposed to be a large part of America, doesn't this limit that, as some opinions (not intentionally abusive) are sometimes best done anonymously to protects ones self from such "abuse"?

So doesn't this one bill, not only NOT work, but limits freedom of speech and cause more effort to everyone?

Not to mention it gives the government more abilities to see who says what and obtain more information of people.

Yay America... Your thoughts?

Would this go out to other countries besides New York on other websites and other things, such as the Cube World Forum? Im not supporting this, rather if it does affect the Internet, will it effect the entire world?

It amuses me to no end how people, especially politicians, think that the internet can be controlled, even regulated. It's not something you can control. The internet is a huge amorphous beast made up of hundreds of millions of different opinions and personalities; not a "piece of property" that you can place regulations on. Try to control the beast, and the beast will fight back. Hard. No one can own the internet by themselves; it's owned by everyone, collectively.

Honestly, I'm not worried about this ban. Is it out of the politicians' league to propose this bill? Yes, it is. But at the end of the day, the freedom of the internet is something that its users must fight for. And they will fight, if they want to keep their freedom. The internet was never going to be an uncontested entity. Anything remotely resembling SOPA or any other internet-based ban can be reversed, via protests, riots, and what have you. And I can honestly say that if Washington state (where I live) was about to undergo this proposed ban, I would be there taking part in the protests, regardless of whether the bill had passed or not.

Cyber bullying doesn't come from Guests on sites. It comes via email, normally, from people you know too. Doesn't it?
Also, not many sites have anonymous users being able to post, anyway. Not that I know of.

Oh, and another thing, regarding the cyber-bullying aspect:

If you're going to come onto the internet, you had better be prepared for cyber-bullying, hate speech, and essentially every other possible kind of negative comment. The internet is by no means kid-friendly or angsty-teenager-friendly. Like I said, the internet is the compilations of hundreds of millions of personalities. If you think all of those personalities are going to be kind and understanding, then you're probably a few fries short of a Happy Meal, if you catch my drift.

Not saying that cyber-bullying is okay...because it's not. But one shouldn't pay much (if any) heed to negative comments coming from any anonymous source. Like Prosaurus said, most of this cyber-bullying is coming from email and personal messages, in other words, from people you know. Placing regulations on anonymously-given comments would do absolutely nothing to prevent cyber-bullying.

I have very very mixed feelings on this...
It could be very beneficial but also can cripple the internet. :(

I live in New York, and I've never heard of this. Pretty messed up crap, most likely nothing's going to happen with it though.

Politicians can propose any bill at any time. That doesn't mean they'll ever get voted on, much less passed.

I really don't even know anyone who gets 'Cyber Bullied' :/ I mean the only websites that can have this occurring are social networking sites and Twitter, because if you don't know someone how can you ACTUALLY cyber bully them? The worst you can do is go up to them an troll them... which is easily laughed along with or ignored. Plus, how many websites do you know that are based in New York?

And if this bill will get carried to the UK, you best your balls I'll be protesting >:(! If this doesn't get opposed against, then they will go further and further until the whole of the internet becomes Club Penguin D:!

When I started going on the internet when I was like 9 or 7, I got a BUNCH of hate because I was some kid who didn't know stuff, I got hated on day after day, but I knew that was coming because I did have a few good friends that used the internet and especially my brother. My brother told me that the internet could be very fun and a highway to hell if you get emotional too quickly to the trolls and haters. Luckly I was all like "Bitch be jelly I better than him" and was pretty prepared for the internet. Sadly not a lot of people know that you can and WILL be hated on no matter who you are or what you do.

I heard about a thread on 4-chan about people who bully other people irl. And you give the bully's Facebook, age, name, who they like, their friends, weaknesses, what makes them stronger and whatever you can give em. After you post it, 100s of 4-chan users literally f*ck the guy up, I seen it happen in action of someone who bullied me and some of my friends. Luckly he bullied a 4-chan user

The thing that makes cyber-bullying different than irl bullying is that you can just walk away and never hear from the person again. It's much much easier to get away from then irl

In ICT, we got forced to learn about cyber-bullying and they told us it was just normal bullying but uses technology over the internet, like taking a picture of them and then sending across on Facebook or something :/

You know what's funny? The politicians who proposed SOPA don't know how to use a computer.
